Laughing Kookaburra

As much as I loved drawing the Little Owl with colored pencil, the variety of color and feather shapes on the Laughing Kookaburra was a bit more interesting and fun to render. But it also took a lot longer.

As always, I started with a pencil sketch.

For every color, there are at least four layers of colored pencil applied. I often like to test out different combinations on a separate piece of paper, so if there are more colors in a drawing, then I have to spend more time experimenting beforehand.

It was very important that I keep the pencils sharp so that I can draw really crisp lines. This resulted in a mountain of pencil shavings.

My setup at the kitchen table, which was quite messy for the few days it took for me to complete my drawing.
